Further Notes:
Reflections (2004) was my first installation in the UK in Aberdeen, Scotland.
I had just relocated from Austin (Texas) and was eager to explore Aberdeen and record as much as I could using binaural microphones and a minidisc recorder (state of the art back then).
I remember wanting to capture that initial feeling of everything being foreign and new before the details of my experience receded beneath the blanket of familiarity and routine.
After several weeks recording I made this installation from hours of treated and untreated field recordings documenting my earliest experiences, burgeoning friendships and artist relationships many of which continue to this day. The work was installed across 6 speakers in a small artist led gallery called Limousine Bull located just off city centre.
Although it was a group show I felt secure that my work would be experienced as intended since I was the only sound artist. Unbeknownst to me, one of the other artists found out that I was using sound and decided that they too wanted to use sound and that it would be a loop of the main theme from Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra occurring once every minute. Wonderful.
Sadly I was not able to include their contribution for this release.
